About the event

In 2023, the District of Columbia will undertake a review of address-based student assignments – typically known as boundary assignments – to determine which District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) students have a right to attend based on their residential address.

Public education in D.C. has a significant degree of choice: across the city, 28 percent of students attend their assigned by-right schools. The D.C. Policy Center’s new report, “The Role of School Boundaries in D.C.” examines where students are more likely to attend their by-right school, which by-right schools are most representative of all public school students, and how enrollment compares to capacity at by-right school facilities. The report also highlights the areas of the city where changes to student assignment policies could impact the largest number of students.

Panelists:

  • Abigail Smith, former DC Deputy Mayor for Education and Co-Founder Seeding Disruption Fellowship
  • Dr. Natalie Neris, Chief of Community Engagement, Kids First Chicago
  • Dr. Genevieve Siegel-Hawley, Associate Professor of Educational Leadership, Virginia Commonwealth University, School of Education
