The D.C. Policy Center is seeking an energetic and organized External Relations & Development Associate to help raise the D.C. Policy Center’s profile with local media and policy circles, and provide internal capacity for our ongoing fundraising efforts. This position will report to the Executive Director, and will manage communications with donors, journalists, and government officials, as well as providing logistical support for event planning and internal projects. This is a full-time, onsite position in Washington, D.C.

Expected Salary: $55,000 – $65,000
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with the rest of the D.C. Policy Center team to ensure that the Center’s research and policy analysis deliverables speak to the needs of key audiences and stakeholders, and contribute most effectively to a productive policy debate in the District of Columbia.
- Execute the Center’s communication strategy, including daily social media and email communications.
- Draft and distribute press releases, and pitch story ideas to journalists.
- Conduct research into prospective funding opportunities, create and manage a database of current and potential donors, draft grant proposals, and manage the grant application and renewal process.
- Coordinate meetings and communications with journalists, policymakers, and other stakeholders in local and regional non-profit and business communities.
- Coordinate internal and external events and meetings, and oversee day-of logistics.
- Other duties as assigned.
Experience and Qualifications
Required
- At least 4 years of relevant professional communications and/or development experience, ideally in a D.C. policy context.
- Ability to work as part of a team with a high level of autonomy and meet multiple deadlines.
- Strong organization and project management skills.
- Experience writing press releases and interacting with local, state, or national media.
- Experience in coordinating logistics and planning events.
- Experience using Microsoft Office, especially Word and Excel; WordPress; MailChimp; and major social media platforms.
- Strong writing, copyediting, and proofreading skills.
- Strong interest in D.C. policy issues, and a commitment to the D.C. Policy Center’s mission.
Preferred
- Experience using contact management systems.
- Experience applying to research grants.
- Interest or experience in creating infographics and basic data visualizations.
- Experience interacting with D.C. government officials, foundations, business groups, community advocacy groups, and/or research organizations.
- Training and professional experience in development/fundraising processes.
